For me, at least (but I expect it’s true of a lot of people), it’s not really a fear of success or failure. Sure, maybe you’ll make millions or maybe you won’t. Whatever. But if you care, and I mean really care, about what you’re writing about or drawing or painting or recording, you just don’t want to fuck it up. In your head it’s golden. It’s the tower you keep heading towards, knowing in your heart you won’t quite get there but you can’t stop walking.
The most terrifying thing about creating anything is that when you really care about what you’re doing there’s a crushing responsibility to the work. It needs to be right. It might not be perfect, but it still needs to be right. It’s not about disappointing yourself or disappointing the world. It’s about disappointing the project. When you really care, your projects own you.
